SEA OF GALILEE 7/1/12
What a day. We start off by renting a car, although here they say hire a car. So we pick up the car at the David Hotel. No probs. We get a GPS with the rental so we don't get lost and were off. Drive for about 1.5 hrs. Roads and Freeways here are good, just like the states. We get to Capernaum first.
Before I go on and tell you about all the sites we visit you have to understand that just about every Jewish, Christian or Muslim site is a guess of where they actually were. And as for Christian sites, I should say Christianity sites, if it's of some relevance to the Bible what they did is build a church over the "supposed" site. So there are a ton of churches and mosques.
OK, so we go to Capernaum and set off to the site where Peter lived, supposedly lived. It's right off the Sea of Galilee. Of course, they've built a church directly above, and I mean literally, directly above it. There's also the ruins of synagogue and some houses from the time of Christ.
We leave Capernaum to the Mt. of Beatitudes or where Christ pronounced the famous Sermon on the Mount. Another church, and a nice view of the valley and Sea of Galilee. Down the mountain and over to the museum that houses a 2,000 year old boat that was found after the levels of the Sea went down in 1986. Who's boat? Peter's? Someone he knew or worked with? Maybe, who knows.
So if you're where Peter lived you have to try the famous Peter's fish (Tilapia). We went to a restaurant right around the corner of the museum and had it. I ordered it grilled, figuring that, that is how Peter would have eaten it, but the waiter told me I wouldn't like it because it's a bitter fish and fried would taste much better. So we had fried Peter's fish. The fish wasn't amazing but the sauce they served with was GREAT! Another check on the bucket list.
We now decide, we have to swim in the Sea. We find a spot where there's a makeshift beach. The Sea of Galilee is a lake and we didn't see any sandy beaches all mud. Who cares, we're gonna swim where Jesus walked on water. AWESOME!!! Water was warm at the edge, once in about 50' it started to cool off quickly. By the way, the place we stopped at to swim, was mostly Muslims swimming there. We were a little cautious at first, then we just didn't care.
A quick drive through Cana, oh there still selling wine. I don't if it's the same wine that Jesus converted from water, but there are wine stores everywhere. After Cana we drove thru Nazareth and of course another church, the church of the Annunciation, where "supposedly" Gabriel told Mary she was pregnant with the Son of God. By the time we got there it was closed, everything closes at 5pm.
We drive back to Tel Aviv, when we see the sign for Megiddo. A quick turn off and we're there. CLOSED, AAAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
Exciting day nonetheless. What's next for tomorrow?
