SATURDAY 7/14/12
LITTLE PETRA & ROCK CAMP
On our web search for stuff to
do in Jordan we found an
awesome campground close to Petra
called Rock Camp. We decided that the day after Petra we would stay there, figuring we could
relax after a long day of walking. We woke up late and headed for Rock Camp. We
had some time before check-in so we drove to Little Petra and saw this other
site. A miniature Petra
in comparison but important nonetheless. It is believed that all the wealthy
people of Petra
lived here. Quick little tour then we were out of there.
We got to Rock Camp and were received by two men that seemed a little surprised we were there. We told them we had reservations but both spoke little English. They called the camp coordinator and he told us that we were the only two persons in the camp that night and that he just got the info. We had it all to ourselves. The reason it's low season because of the heat. Better for us. Although it was hot, it was not unbearable.

After a quick tour of the camp, we decided we would hang out in the gathering area since it was the most shaded, remember we're in the middle of the desert and the only shade we have is man made or the rock canyons. So we stayed there cooling off with some tea. We eventually took a nap there. We were invited to go on a small hike into the Siq, that is close to the campground. We went into it and our guide took a couple of cushions and some tea, to relax with when we got to the end of the Siq. We got to the end and he gathered some small pieces of wood started a fire and we drank tea. It was nice.

After that we went back to camp and relaxed till dinner was served. Dinner is an event. We could only imagine when the camp is full at 60 guests. We ate, talked with Emad the camp coordinator about life in Petra and as young Muslim man. It was very informative and entertaining. Ask us for the details. After dinner a brief stay by the fire staring at the stars and then off to bed. By the way the tent was very, very nice. Check it out.
